War on Terrorism's Economic Effects
Cynicism From Gary North…
The war on terrorism is being brought to us by the same high-efficiency organization that has waged the war on drugs for five decades. We should expect similar results."
If the so-called "War on Terrorism" continues for an indefinite period of time, we should continue to see the price of natural resources (such as crude oil and natural gas) rise. Commodities such as aluminum, steel and silver (45% of silver's application is industrial) could also continue rising. Defense contractors and military equipment manufacturers could see a considerable increase in revenue, and a subsequent increase in stock prices.
On a more personal note, this past Tuesday and Thursday, the military base in Khandahar, Afghanistan was hit with mortars and rockets. My brother was at the Khandahar base for two weeks (U.S. Army) and he said both attacks happened at night; sirens went off, and the ground shook. Since he's not based in Khandahar, it was very coincidental that he happened to be at the base during the week of the attacks. Talking with him over IM, Afghanistan seems like such a surreal world…rockets and mortars, bomb squads and demolitions. Metaphorically speaking, the entire Middle East is a minefield.
